Japanese cuisine covers many topics, so our project will me mainly focused on seasonal Japanese foods, drinks, and chopsticks as part of cuisine. The Japanese base their foods on all four seasons, spring, summer, fall, and winter. Basing food on seasons happens in many cultures. Just like in Canada, the cooler, quicker foods are saved for the summer or warm seasons, and the warm foods are prepaired in cooler seasons. Here are some common foods according to the seasons.
Spring (haru)
Spring foods are usually very colorful, and happy. Spring foods are made to bring out a happy vibe, to celebrate the coming of summer and girls day. Girls day, or hina-matsuri, is the 3rd of March and has some traditional foods along with it. Some comon foods seved around hina -matsuri are Hinachirashi (colorful sushi served on a plate), Ushio-jiru (Clam soup), Sakura-mochi (sweet pink rice cakes), and Hina-arare (colorful rice crackers). Children's day is March 5, and many of the same meals would be served on that day, just in deffernt colours.
Summer (natsu)
Summer is the time were people get to eat the cooler foods. Some popular cooler foods are harusame(cold noodle salad), Hiyayakko( Tofu squares), Rei-shabu( cold shabu-shabu), and Unagi rice bowls( cold eel). Unagi is very popular in the summer because it is said to give people stamina, making them have energy in the hot summer days.
Fall (aki)
Since fall is a time of harvest, the foods that get picked in fall usually made into meals. Matsutake mushrooms are ready to get picked around october so meals like mushrooms soup, and matsutake gohan are very popualr around this time. Chestnuts or "kuri" are harvested in fall, and are put on rice to make a kuri gohan dish. Warmer dishes are being prepaired around the end of fall, making there way into the winter recipes.
Winter(fuyu)
Soups are very popular in winter, simply because they're warm. Oden is a very popular stew in japan. It is made with fish cakes, boiled eggs, radishes, yam cakes, and much more. Soups are easy becasue instead of spending lots of time organizing the plates, you throw the ingredients into a big pot and put it on the stove. Other popular soups are miso soup, and ramen.
Drinks
Many of the drinks we have here, are also in japan.New japanese soft drinks are constantly being created, such as the ice cucumber drink made by
pepsi, and the Pocari Sweat heath drink produced in japan. Almoast every soft drink is made into a bottle or can so it can be despensed from a vending machine. Famous American drinks such as Root Beer are almost unheard of in japan
